BULGARIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WORLD

+ THE CYRILLIC ALPHABET
(link active)
-created by the Bulgarian Saint Clement on the order of the Bulgarian Tsar, Boris I
-
St. Clement named the Bulgarian alphabet 'Cyrillic' in the honor of his teacher St. Cyril.

+ ANCIENT BULGARIAN CALENDAR
(link active)
- the question was raised in UNESCO by non-Bulgarian scientists whether this calendar should be proclaimed the current one for the whole world
-most sophisticated calendar system in existance
-the calendar is based on observations of Jupiter and the Sun and is more precise than the modern Western calendar we use today

+ JEW SALVATION
(link active)
- Bulgaria is the only country in Europe that saved it's entire Jewish population (48,000) from Hitler's grasp
-
The rescue of the Bulgarian Jews represents a rare event in the history of the civilized world. A small country of only 8 million people had the courage to withstand the constant pressure exercised by the Nazis, whose aim was to exterminate a defencesless minority. The pressure lasted four years. An entire nation arose against the inhuman theory of race superiority and risked security and lives in a fight that was long and exhausting.

+ OLD BULGARIAN (CHURCH SLAVONIC)
- the liturgial language used to translate the Bible and educate the Slavs
- one of the three languages of the Christian church: Latin, Greek and Old Bulgarian

+ FATHER OF THE COMPUTER
- John Atanasoff, true inventor of the digital electronic computer
-
The Atanasov family name had been changed into Atanasoff by immigration officers on Ellis Island when Bulgarian Ivan Atanasov came to America in 1889
